As the war in Ukraine brought thousands of refugees to Germany and Europe, and volunteers mounted an extraordinary effort to house and resettle them, a troubling situation caught our attention.
Third-country nationals, particularly people of colour, who had made their homes in Ukraine were being excluded from the government help and support offered to Ukrainian nationals. Many faced the threat of imminent deportation.
Small, volunteer-led organisations like BIPoC Ukraine & Friends in Germany were doing their best to put the issue on policymakers' agenda. We volunteered to collaborate with those affected and helped them tell their stories.
